I am doing a science fair project on whether or not the darkness of a soda (like root beer compared to sprite) will have a difference in explosion. So, what does shaking a soda have to do with the carbonation making the soda explode?
Shaking a carbonated beverage releases the heterogeneous mixture of carbonate and the flavored water. When the carbonate is released from the liquid, it has not where to go but up and out of the container because the pressure in the container isn’t great enough to put the carbonate back in the liquid. It is a physical change in the same way you can evaporate salt water and have salt residue left over.
