i’m sure all movie fans are familiar with the Indiana Jones series. So in the temple of doom there is the scene where they are in the plane, it runs out of gas, and they have to jump out in a raft. they even made an episode of mythbusters that dealt with this issue. But when the plane hits the cliff it explodes. If the plane had gas in it they wouldn’t have had to jump out. So why is it a plane with no gas in it explodes? Doesn’t there need to be fuel for an explosion? And for that matter why does everything in movies have to explode?

Because it looks cooler and more dangerous, especially in action/adventure movies. But having said that, there would still probably be a small explosion, but not to the extent as seen in the film. Its exaggerated for effect.

The tank might be empty but the fumes fill the tank and the lines and that is more combustible then a liquid propellant.
