Mostly though, over eating causes chemical changes in the fish's body they can't recover from. Ever heard of water poisoning? It's when humans die of drinking too much water. The excess water flushes out electrolytes the heart needs to beat. It's the same concept with over fed fish. Chemical irregularities prove fatal. In this case, the fish start looking sick and just die. The only outward signs are faded body coloration, bloated bellies, and maybe clamped fins. Over fed fish will be still and look miserable. Species of fish that come from areas where meals are few and far between instinctively gorge when there is plenty available ... but in their natural environment "plenty" still isn't enough to "pop their gut".
